Education
He studied with Rabbi Abraham Abulafia around 1272–1274, and Abulafia regarded him, according to the source, as his most accomplished disciple. The source presents him as a continuator of Abulafia’s school in the mystical combination of letters and numbers.
His thought
He began under the influence of Abulafia’s ecstatic system, but later showed greater affinity for philosophy, and tried to reconcile it with Kabbalah, which he saw as its foundation. The source credits him with having identified the Ein Sof with the first sefirah, an opinion that most kabbalists rejected from the 16th century on.
His works
- Ginnat Egoz (“The Garden of Nuts”): written at twenty-six, in three parts.
- Shaarei Orah (“The Gates of Light”): his most influential work, dated before 1293. It was translated into Latin by Paolo Riccio and used by Johannes Reuchlin.
- Shaarei Tzedek, on the ten sefirot.
- Sod HaNachash, on kabbalistic revelations of the serpent.
- Others: Hasagot (criticisms of the Guide for the Perplexed), Sodot HaMitzvot and Tzofnat Paaneach.
His influence
The source says that his works influenced both Jewish and Christian mysticism. Among his Jewish readers are Cordovero, Karo and Vital, and the Vilna Gaon recommended the study of Shaarei Orah. See the biographies of the Ramak and of Rabbi Yosef Karo.
